Do you have family portraits coming up and finding it difficult to reserve a makeup artist? Well then, I hope this blog post finds you well. As a Jacksonville, FL Family photographer, I have compiled the top 5 tips for a DIY Makeup for your family portraits!
Tip #1
Natural light
First and foremost, find an area with beautiful natural light to do your makeup. Natural light will show you how the colors look on your skin. There is nothing worse than thinking your foundation color matches but then you walk outside and notice that it is two shades too dark or vice versa. If you are in a room that is filled with natural light just turn off all artificial lights. Do your makeup by the window or from any source of natural light that you find.
Tip #2
Primer/finishing spray
Prep your eyes and face. Using a quality face and eye primer is key to applying makeup on a smooth canvas. Primers allow your makeup to perform to its top quality. It also helps to preserve it over time, depending on when you apply it. Once you are done with applying your makeup, use a setting or finishing spray to preserve it. This can be crucial especially for those summer sessions where the sun is brutal!
Tip #3
Matte colors
When it comes to eyeshadows, I know we all love those sparkly eye-catching colors but it’s important to stick with matte colors when doing professional photos. All the shimmer/glitter can catch light and reflect it back in some scenarios. Stick to matte colors that complement your skin. You don’t want bold colors to takeaway from the main subject of the photographs.
Tip #4
SPF
I get it, we are doing our best at preventing aging and we love things that contain SPF. As a sunscreen wearer, before I head out the door, type of gal- I get it. But when it comes to photos especially if your photographer is using flash- it can create a huge white cast on your face. It is something I highly recommend to NOT use when doing your own makeup. SPF can be found in foundation and setting powders, so it’s best to check all the products you’ll be using.
Tip #5
Fake Eyelashes
Fake eyelashes have a way of opening your eyes and it helps bring attention. Use some fake eyelashes to make the whole look pop. Sometimes using mascara and curling your eyelash is not enough when it comes to photographs. If you have never used fake eyelashes then practice, practice, practice! They can be a very tedious task and a frustrating step in doing your own makeup.
I certainly do hope that you found this article helpful! Doing your own makeup can be scary especially if it’s something you don’t do often.
Go to a local store
When in doubt you can always request an appointment with your local Ulta or Sephora store especially if you have a sunset session reserved.
